| Description: | Cape Cod is a long peninsula forming the easterly extremity of Massachusetts. This cape forms the southern and eastern shores of Cape Cod Bay, the northern shore of Nantucket Sound, and the eastern shore of Buzzards Bay. The northern trend of Cape Cod, forming what is sometimes called the Hook of the Cape, is known as the Lower Cape. The portion of Cape Cod between Chatham and Cape Cod Canal is known as the Upper Cape.
Buzzards Bay is the approach to New Bedford and the entrance of Cape Cod Canal. The bay indents the south shore of Massachusetts, extending in a northeasterly direction from Rhode Island Sound. The bay is enclosed on the south side, and separated from Vineyard Sound, by the Elizabeth Islands |
